It depends...
This review is for: TCF National Bank
I really do love their hours since they are open 7 days a week. There is also a bank location at my boyfriend's work where we always deposit our paychecks. TCF Bank was on my campus for the first two years I went there so I hooked an account up there. It was also nice because there was the option of hooking my account to my campus ID card. I never used that feature I guess, but it was available to me. I was doing fine with them, and eventually hooked up my account with my boyfriends account. Soon I realized they weren't as nice as I thought. We overdrafted once, making a few purchases during that time, and ended up with over $100 in fees! Whether the charge we made was big or small, they all ended up getting about $30 per charge. That hurts for a college student, and thankfully they were a little lenient since we had never done it before, taking off about half the charges. Still, the fact that their fees were so much for small charges made me more careful and wary of them. The employees are certainly nice though, even though some can be creepy nice.

Convenient local bank
This review is for: TCF National Bank
I originally opened an account at TCF because its conveniently located at my local Jewel food store. I have been banking with TCF for approximately 15 years. Banking with TCF has had its ups and downs over the years. The cost of overdrafts has gone way up and they at times will pay or bounce a check and you have no way of knowing what the criteria is for them to bounce the check or go ahead and cash it, but either way you/re still charged the exhorbitant overdraft fee. I am happy with the fact that they are open 7 days a week and even open on most holidays. I just wish there were more TCF atm machines available so that you wouldnt get charged the extra fee for using another banks atm. I'd say the best thing about banking with them are the convenient hours and having the bank right there where I do alot of grocery shopping. The worst I would say are that many times you have a long wait in line especially when someone in a branch in a store is opening an account. They dont have a separate desk to go to and you have to use a regular teller to open an account and it can be really inconvenient if you're waiting and in a hurry. The over the phone banking service is very convenient for me because it gives me the opportunity to check my balance and to see if checks have cleared or not. Customer service Im not that happy with because it is not a local branch, it is located somewhere in Chicago I believe and I would rather speak to someone locally where I normally bank.
I would recommend TCF to someone who likes to have someplace convenient where they shop for their banking services. Overall, its not too bad for a bank and they do offer a bonus if you refer someone to open an account and they also offer gift cards to purchase there from the teller.

Mixed feelings about TCF.
This review is for: TCF National Bank
I signed up for a TCF bank account a few months ago. I initally was impressed with the banks hours, open 7 days a week. I made my inital deposit and everything was going good for the first month or so, until all their fees started to show up. TCF charges expensive fees for various things. I use my ATM card quite a bit for withdrawing cash. At the end of the month I incurred $21 dollars worth of TCF fees for using my card. They charge $3.00 each time you use the card to withdraw cash(granted they do have some free ATM's, but nowhere near me). This $3.00 charge in addition to the charge you already get by whomever owns the ATM begins to add up. I did have an incident where i wrote a check toi my grandmother for $150, she informed me that she was not going to cash it as she did not need it. So I presumed I had an extra $150 in my bank account. Turns out, she did end up cashing that check. They took every charge after the date that check was written and charged $39.00 for every single one of them, even $3-4 charges. It totaled up to about $275 in charges. I spoke with customer service several times and explained the situation, no push with them. I understood it was my responsbility, but I expected a bit of lenience as I had no record of overdrafting previously. TCF is a bank to beware of in my opinion, certainly all banks have their negatives, but I think TCF's negatives outshines most other banks.
